Student Life
Student life at Our Lady of Grace School is fun, life-giving and growth-filled!
SCHOOL AT MASS
Kindergarten through grade eight students attend monthly School at Mass. Each class takes turns in leadership parts for this monthly time of time. Some students are cantors,
Lectors, greeters, servers, and gift-bearers! Singing rehearsal and instruction on the parts of the Mass always preface this monthly celebration. Additionally, there is Middle School at Mass once a month. Middle School students also receive the opportunity to participate in Shared Scripture Reflection.
PRAYER PARTNERS
Younger students are partnered with older students to enjoy each other, perform community activities, and attend School at Mass together. Sixth grade students welcome their new “prayer partners” into Kindergarten and stay with them through second grade.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Students are eligible to participate in the music program and after school band from fourth grade and up. Individual lessons are provided within the school day. Advanced students may also participate in afterschool band and enter into the Archdiocesan Band Concert competition at the end of the school year.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Middle School students elect yearly officers. The officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer and are elected from grades seven and eight. Commissioners of Religious Activities, Athletics, Publicity, Environment and Safety also support the Executive Committee with many school –wide activities such as Tag Day, Raffles, Student Appreciation Day, Teacher Appreciation Day, and Recycling activities.
GENERATION DAY
Grandparents and other “special persons” in the life of each student are invited to share part of their school day once a year. These special visitors always enjoy a short school-wide presentation and then spend time with the special students! Time for a sweet treat and letter writing by the grandparents is always a special way to bring closure to their day!
ANNUAL MUSIC PROGRAMS
OLGS always looks forward to their annual Christmas/Advent and Spring music programs. Students in grades five through eight present their musical renditions at Christmas time while kindergarten through grade four initiate the feeling that “spring is in the air.” The OLGS Band always performs at each musical program.
ORATORY COMPETITIONS
All middle school students are required to initially participate in the annual oratory competitions offered by the area Optimist Clubs. Selected students then participate in either the Hereford, Jacksonville, Towson and Cockeysville competitions. Students both write and deliver a four-minute presentation designed on a topic offered by the Optimist Clubs.
SCIENCE FAIR
Seventh and eighth grade middle school students are required to participate in a yearly Science Fair competition. This opportunity allows each student to develop skill in the use of the scientific method as well as learn more about science topics through hands-on activities and research.
TUESDAY AFTERNOOON PIZZA
Under the guidance of the parish youth minister, middle school students voluntarily gather to enjoy refreshments, socialization time, and some reflection and shared discussions on topics offered by the program, “The Edge.”
AWARDS ASSEMBLY
Every OLGS student looks forward to this annual event. The purpose of this assembly is to build positive self-images, confidence, and awareness of a community of learners.
Students can be recognized for participation in many of the school events, perfect or excellent attendance, competitions, and monthly PRIDE awards for honesty, respect, and responsibilities.
